Despite being the "Cradle of Liberty", Boston in its early history was a town with a slave population. This tour explores the African American history of Boston starting with its founding in 1630 and ending in the 1900's. We'll see sites associated qwith African Americans in the Colonial era and the American Revolution, including a discussion on African Americans at the Battle of Bunker Hill at the Bunker Hill Monument. We'll discuss leading abolitionist of the antebellum period in Boston, including William Lloyd Garrison, Lewis Hayden, and Wendell Phillips. We'll explore the Black Heritage Trail through Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood and talk about the Underground Railroad in Boston and its vicinity.
